The Near Death of a once Great football club

Post  Hobbit@mp3. on Fri Feb 05, 2010 6:32 pm

For the past two years Cork City FC has had many problems, mostly financial. Because of this we had to sell all our good players to English football clubs - players like Kevin Doyle (now @ Wolves), Shane Long (Reading), Dave Mooney (Charlton) etc etc.

That helped us get some money for the club. Unfortunately this hasn't saved the club, and since last year had a few attempts against us to be wound up (close the club forever). The Debts of the club rose to €800,000 just last year. A new chariman was promoted and well since then he's turned the club into a complete disaster.

2009 had a few more winding up claims and were lucky once that they paid with hours to spare, many people of Cork actually donating to save CCFC ! We finished 3rd in the League of Ireland which was good.

On 23rd December, the chairman appointed a new manager - Roddy Collins. Since then the club has pretty much DIED. The club shop has closed, since before Xmas and hasn't opened since. The website is down and is still waiting to be updated since the New Year because of no payments. Many players didn't get paid since last October and still haven't been paid ! Many have left the club especially the club captain who was talking on the radio last week. He said he didn't get paid since November, has a mortgage to pay himself, his wife is pregnant and he was trying to find another job to get money. 6 players met and discussed talking about having the chairman out. Their punishment? 2 weeks wages fined that they still wouldn't have received. They can't play in their local ground because of rent not being paid. There are only 6 players left on contract with the club and soon enough this club will die for sure. The best news that came out of the club has been the chairman stepping down !

I look up the news everyday to make sure CCFC is still alive. The atmosphere at the matches is brilliant and nothing I've seen before - more fun than any English match or Dutch or any other.

Anyways lets all hope for the sake of Cork City that the club stays alive Very Happy

Today we were given a lifeline.

http://www.rte.ie/sport/soccer/2010/0215/cork.html

And given until next week to pay up something like 110,000 euro or they would close the club. We still have to get money for one player and that might save us for now Smile

Yay
